The Vignes twin sisters will never be able to distinguish themselves from one another. After growing up together in a small, southern black community and fleeing at the age of sixteen, their families, communities, and racial identities are all different as adults. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town from which she once tried to flee. The other dresses up as a white woman, and her white husband is unaware of her past. The twins’ fates are intertwined despite being separated by thousands of miles and just as many lies. What will happen to the next generation if their daughters’ stories collide?

Brit Bennett weaves together multiple strands and generations of this family from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, to create a story that is both a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of American history. The Vanishing Half explores some of the many reasons and realms in which people feel compelled to live as someone other than their ancestors, as well as the long-term impact of the past on a person’s decisions, desires, and expectations.
