Ernest Cline Bio
Ernest Cline is a New York Times bestselling author, screenwriter, father, and all-around nerd. He is the author of the novels Ready Player One and Armada, as well as a co-screenwriter of Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of Ready Player One. His books have been published in over fifty countries and spent over 100 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. He currently resides in Austin, Texas, with his family, a time-traveling DeLorean, and an extensive collection of classic video games.
Cline was born in Ashland, Ohio, and raised there as the son of Faye Imogene (née Williams) and Ernest Christy Cline. Cline was «addicted to video games and movies,» as a child in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly Star Wars, John Hughes films, and the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons. In his twenties, he worked in information technology and wrote screenplays in his spare time.
Cline performed his original work at Austin Poetry Slam venues from 1997 to 2001. He won the Austin Poetry Slam in 1998 and 2001, and he was a member of the Austin Poetry Slam Teams at the 1998 Austin National Poetry Slam and the 2001 Seattle National Poetry Slam. «Dance, Monkeys, Dance,» «Nerd Porn Auteur,» and «When I Was a Kid.» are among his most popular spoken-word pieces. Cline later reworked «Dance Monkeys Dance» into a spoof educational filmstrip, which became a popular viral video that has now been translated into 29 languages.
Cline self-published The Importance of Being Ernest, a chapbook collection of his spoken-word writing, in 2001, and released The Geek Wants Out an album. The Importance of Being Ernest was reissued in the fall of 2013 by Write Bloody Publishing, with new cover art by Gary Musgrave and interior illustrations by Len Peralta.
Ernest Cline Books
Cline sold his first novel, Ready Player One, set in a dystopian vision of the 2040s, in June 2010. In a sort of competition, the book is about a kid who tries to solve the keys to finding a billionaire’s wealth. Crown Publishing Group won a bidding war for the book (a division of Random House). The novel’s film rights were sold the next day to Warner Bros., with Cline co-writing the screenplay. Cline revealed on his blog ten months later, with the hardcover release coinciding with the paperback release, that both the paperback and hardcover editions of Ready Player One contain an elaborately hidden Easter egg. This clue was the first in a series of staged video gaming tests, similar to the novel’s plot. Cline also revealed that the grand prize for the competition would be a 1981 DeLorean. The award was given in 2012. The paperback is now in its seventeenth printing.
Crown Publishing Group published Cline’s second novel, Armada, on July 14, 2015. Cline announced the sale of the film rights to Armada to Universal Pictures on December 7, 2015, for a reported seven-figure sum.
In August of 2015, a third novel was announced. This novel has been confirmed as a sequel to Ready Player One. It is scheduled for release on November 24, 2020.
Ernest Cline Private life
He married poet/nonfiction writer Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz in 2016, whom he met at the National Poetry Slam in 1998.
Black Tiger, which features prominently in the plot of Ready Player One, is Cline’s all-time favorite video game.
Ready Player Two Audiobook Excerpt Transcript
After i won holiday’s contest, i remained offline for nine straight days, a new personal record when i finally logged back into my oasis account. I was sitting in my new corner office on the top floor of the gss skyscraper in downtown columbus ohio preparing to start my gig as one of the company’s new owners. The other three were still scattered across the globe. Shoto had flown back home to japan to take over operations at gss’s. Hokkaido division h was enjoying an extended vacation in senegal, a country she dreamed of visiting her whole life because her ancestors had come from there and samantha had flown back to vancouver to pack up her belongings and say goodbye to her grandmother evelyn.
She wasn’t due to arrive here in columbus for another four days, which seemed like an eternity i needed to distract myself until our reunion, so i decided to log back into the oasis and try out a few more of the super user abilities my avatar now possessed. I climbed into my brand new top of the line: oasis immersion rig a habesha oir 9400 then put on my visor and haptic gloves and initiated the login sequence. My avatar reappeared, where i’d last logged out on the planet thonia standing outside the gates of castle anorak. As i’d anticipated, there were thousands of other avatars already gathered there all waiting patiently for me to make an appearance. According to the newsfeed headlines, some of them had been camped out there all week ever since i’d resurrected them in the aftermath of our epic battle against the sixers in my first official act as one of gss new owners just a few hours after the fight ended.
I’D authorized our admins to restore all the items, credits and power levels. Those heroic users had lost along with their avatars. I thought it was the least we could do to repay them for their help and samantha, h and shoto had agreed. It was the first decision. We’D voted on as the company’s new co-owners as soon as the avatars in my vicinity spotted me.
They began to run in my direction closing in on me from all sides at once to avoid getting mobbed. I teleported inside the castle into anorak’s study a room in the highest tower that i alone could enter thanks to the robes of anorak. I now wore the obsidian black garment, endowed my avatar with the godlike powers holiday’s own avatar had once possessed. I glanced around the cluttered study here. Just over a week ago, anorak had declared me the winner of holiday’s contest and changed my life forever.
My eyes fell upon the painting of a black dragon that hung on the wall beneath it stood an ornate crystal pedestal, with a jewel-encrusted chalice resting on top of it, and cradled within the chalice was the object. I’D spent so many years searching for halliday’s silver, easter egg. I walked over to admire it, and that was when i noticed something strange: an inscription on the egg’s, otherwise pristine surface, one that definitely hadn’t been there when i’d last seen it nine days earlier. No other avatars could enter this room. No one could have tampered with the egg, so there was only one way that inscription could have gotten there.
Halliday himself must have programmed it to appear on the egg’s surface. It could have appeared right after anorak gave me his robes and i’d just been too distracted to notice.
