When twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) come at their mother’s (Naomi Watts) rural house to find her face bandaged in bandages—the result, she claims, of recent cosmetic surgery—they immediately suspect something is amiss. She establishes bizarre new house rules, smokes in her bathroom, and discreetly rips up a sketch they gave her—all of which their loving mother would never do. As her conduct becomes more odd and erratic, a terrifying concept sinks into the boys’ minds: the sinking sensation that the woman beneath the gauze, who’s cooking their dinner and sleeping in the next room, isn’t their mother at all.
